A mother from Houston is thanking the many people who had a part to play in her triumphant story during the events of Hurricane Harvey.
Da’Jauh Hennix took her eight-month-old baby in her arms before escaping from her mother’s apartment in east Houston. She was struggling to come up for air in the flood that was caused by the hurricane.
The hurricane has affected millions of people in Texas and has claimed the lives of nearly 30 people. “I was crying, I was scared,” Hennix said two days after the incident. Harris County Constable Precinct 2 Officer Reed Clark drove a vehicle into the road that Hennix was on and saw her with her daughter, Paige.
“She was holding the baby up and then the water would come up,” Clark said. “You could see her neck and her head come under the water and she was trying to get to higher ground.” In a heroic swoop, Clark grabbed Paige from the water and sat her down safely. “He was like, she’s going to be in a black truck at the front. I’m like that’s fine,” Hennix said.
But Hennix lost track of when the officer had gone with her daughter due to all the black trucks that were still standing tall above the waters. She eventually ended up in a shelter but was still looking for Paige. “I was panicking, I was crying. My mom, she was scared and crying as well,” she said.
When Hennix recovered from the stressful occasion, she posted on Facebook, inquiring about the whereabouts of her daughter. At a similar time, Clark put a picture online alerting the public about a girl he had rescued from the hurricane’s damage – Paige.
His post went viral and was seen by millions of Facebook users. Eventually, the two were put in contact and it wasn’t long before the mother and daughter were reunited. “She had a new blanket, she was dry, she was fed. When we got her she was sleeping,” the relieved mother said.
Since then, Clark and Hennix have agreed to go on a reunion together to celebrate their triumph. And Clark is amazed by the mother’s initial sacrifice.
“She is the perfect example of a great mother,” Clark said. “She didn’t say help me one bit, she handed her baby over and said, ‘Help my baby, get my baby out of here.'”
