Jessica Allen was thoroughly excited to become a surrogate mother. Already a mother of two, Allen was ready to help another couple become parents. Needless to say, being paid $30,000 for the service is a nice touch. It was life-changing money for Allen, but when she found out the stunning news upon delivery, it completely changed everything.

Only six weeks after finding out she was pregnant, she was told that she was actually carrying twins. And things could have been a lot different if she was helping a different family. However, the Lius (the name of the family she was helping) were delighted after finding out the huge surprise.

“I was a bit scared, but I heard the Liu’s were thrilled to be having twins. My $30,000 payment, including expenses – which I received in installments by check each month – was increased by $5,000 for the second child,” Allen said.

“Not once during the pregnancy did any of the medical staff provided by the agency say that the babies were in separate sacs. As far as we were concerned, the transferred embryo had split in two and the twins were identical.”

Allen was instantly suspicious after giving birth to the twins. This is when she noticed that the babies didn’t look similar, at all. But the question is this – how can this rare phenomenon happen? The answer is something called superfetation. This basically means when a woman gets pregnant for a second time while she is already pregnant.

Despite the amicable nature of the procedure, there was a long custody battle. Eventually, the Allens came out of the case having to pay the lawyer and walking into the sunset with their new baby, Max.
